Supervision approach and goals

LCMHC Supervisor Information

As an LCMHCS in North Carolina, I view supervision as a collaborative, developmental, and ethically grounded relationship that supports an LCMHCA in becoming a competent, reflective, and confident independent clinician. While supervision fulfills North Carolina Board requirements—including oversight of clinical practice, skill development, and evaluation—it is also an opportunity to cultivate professional identity, cultural humility, and lifelong learning.

What I strive for as a Supervisor:

Inclusivity and cultural humility: I strive to create a supervision environment where diversity is recognized as a clinical strength. I encourage open dialogue about culture, identity, privilege, bias, intersectionality, and systemic influences on both the therapeutic relationship and the supervisory relationship. Supervision is a space where differences are explored with curiosity, respect, and accountability.

Psychological safety: I foster a relationship in which supervisees feel comfortable discussing clinical uncertainties, ethical dilemmas, mistakes, and personal reactions without fear of judgment. I believe vulnerability supports professional growth when paired with thoughtful guidance and constructive feedback.

Developmental mentorship: I tailor supervision to the supervisee's stage of professional development, balancing support with increasing autonomy. Together we identify strengths, address growth areas, and establish meaningful learning goals that align with clinical competence and professional aspirations.

Reflective practice: I encourage critical thinking, self-awareness, and intentional use of self in counseling. Supervision extends beyond case management to include reflection on clinical decision-making, countertransference, wellness, and the impact of personal and professional experiences on therapeutic work.

Evidence-informed and ethical practice: I support supervisees in integrating current research, ethical decision-making, and best practices into clinical care while ensuring compliance with North Carolina supervision standards and professional codes of ethics.

Ultimately, my goal is to develop counselors who are clinically skilled, ethically grounded, culturally responsive, and prepared to provide compassionate, effective care to diverse communities. I view supervision as a partnership that promotes professional excellence while honoring each supervisee's unique experiences, perspectives, and path toward independent licensure.
